Cancel, Inactivate, or Continue a Family Business Upon Retirement
If you are planning to retire and close your contracting business, please follow the steps to cancel your license on the Cancel Your License page. Note that canceling a license means it can no longer be used, and you will no longer be able to perform or contract for work once the cancellation has been put into place. Once canceled, the license cannot be reinstated. Therefore, canceling your license means that if you should decide to start contracting again in the future, you may need to retake examinations and apply for a new license.
If you would like to only inactivate your license, please go to the Inactivate Your License page. Note that inactivating your license means the license cannot be used for contracting while inactive and requires renewals every 4 years. An inactive license can be reactivated unless it has been expired for more than 5 years. The benefit of inactivating a license is that it can be easily reactivated if you decide to start contracting again. You also will keep your license number and will not have to take examinations again if you only inactivate your license.
If you are interested in passing your license on to a direct family member to continue the business, please see the information about obtaining a continuance of the license and reissuing the license number to a direct family member on this page with details about waiver requirements.
If you are interested in having a current officer or supervising employee take over your licensed corporation or limited liability company, please see the information about disassociating, replacing, and adding a qualifier or personnel on the license found on the Change in Personnel page.
