Tips for Calling CSLB's Licensing Information Center

Much of the information and services you find here on the CSLB Web site are also available to you on your telephone. Just call 1-800-321-CSLB (2752).

You can check the status of a contractor's license, get educational information, order free publications, or get help maintaining or getting your contractor's license. This information is available 24/7 through our automated system.

Chances are you will be able to get your information that way. If you're not, you'll be given an opportunity to have your call transferred to the CSLB's Licensing Information Center.

The center is staffed with technicians specially trained to assist licensees, applicants and consumers with a variety of issues. Our technicians are available Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm, except for holidays.

Please be aware that with the budget cutbacks there are fewer technicians available to help. With that in mind, here are some frequently asked questions and answers that will help you when you call:

Q:When are traditionally the longest wait times?
A:You'll traditionally find the longest wait times on Monday and Tuesday mornings, or on the first day after a holiday. Wait times can also be a bit longer during lunch breaks, between 11:30am and 1:30pm, when we stagger lunches for our technicians. The end of the day, between 4:30pm and 5:00pm is often busy. Other busy times are on rainy days and when there are "hot" issues that affect a lot of our licensees.

Q:When are wait times traditionally the shortest?
A:The shortest wait times tend to be later in the week. Another good time to call is on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday between 9:30am and 11:30am or 2:00pm and 4:00pm.

Q:Are there any other tips that will help me when I call?
A:When you call, be prepared and have a pen or pencil and paper so you can write down information. If you're a licensee, it's important to know your license number and what specific questions you have. If you've got a complicated issue, be sure the person who calls can answer all the questions we'll need to ask. Finally expect that if our technician cannot help you completely, we will get your name and a call back number.
